Overcome by Cyber Risks?

January 2016

The Internet and related information and communications tools have delivered enormous benefits to the global economy. These gains, however, are expected to tail off as the technologies become more ubiquitous, while the costs and associated risks look set to rise. The million dollar question, then, is whether the costs outweigh the benefits and what we can do to ensure the best possible outcome.

Zurich Insurance Group and the Atlantic Council’s Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security teamed with the Pardee Center for International Future to conduct an extensive quantitative analysis of this issue. Their findings are published in a new report, Risk Nexus: Overcome by cyber risks? Economic benefits and costs of alternate cyber futures.

Cybercriminals Stole More Than Data in 2015: Kaspersky Report

Mobile devices and financial institutions became primary targets for cybercriminals to steal money directly from individuals in 2015, according to a new report from Kaspersky Labs, which took a look at the type of cyber events that occurred most frequently this year and made predictions for the future.

While data breaches at large retailers seem to grab headlines and prompt litigation, Kaspersky found that targeted advanced persistent threat (APT) attacks against banks, government agencies, and other high-profile organizations rose in 2015. Not content to steal names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and other personally identifiable information, criminals interested in money and state secrets more assertively entered the cyber fray this year.

Cyber Represents Growth Area for Reinsurers: Aon Report

Reinsurers see cyber risk as a necessary area to offer capacity to meet the growing demand on primary insurers from clients and despite the prevalence of data breaches, the reinsurance industry should be able to meet the need, according to a new report from Aon.

“While there is still headline risk from recent data breaches such as Anthem, Inc., Premera Blue Cross, Experian / T-Mobile, and Ashley Madison, it still remains an opportunity for many who are willing to invest in resources to understand the dynamics of cyber as a peril and product,” noted Aon in its report.

European D&O Communication More Transparent, Informed

Increased interest by directors and officers in the level and scope of coverage provided by their D&O policy is changing the role of the European risk manager.

According to a panel of risk managers at Advisen’s virtual European Executive Risk Insights Conference (EERIC), there is increasingly a need to provide information.

“Besides being up to date about the technical aspects of D&O insurance, risk managers must provide much more education and explain how the D&O program is designed to respond,” explained Martine Hecq, manager in charge of financial lines, nuclear insurance and captive vehicles, ENGIE.

US House Committee Seeks Advice From Private Sector on Battling Cyber Threats

Federal lawmakers last week sought to learn from the private sector how to better deal with cyber attacks during a hearing of a subcommittee of the US House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

The key, according to those testifying, appears to be effort, commitment, and progress on improving, rather than good intentions.
